On the occasion of Doctors’ Day, President Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate the Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath Ayush University in Gorakhpur, marking a significant milestone as Uttar Pradesh’s first Ayush university. This new institution becomes the fourth functional university in the district, joining Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University, Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology, and Mahayogi Gorakhnath University.
Situated in Pipri, the university spans 52 acres and has been built at an estimated cost of ₹267.50 crore. It aims to be a leading center for traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Yoga, Naturopathy, and Siddha. Prior to its establishment, these disciplines were overseen by separate regulatory bodies. Now, all 98 government and private Ayush colleges across the state will be brought under this single institution’s jurisdiction.
The university is expected to boost medical tourism, promote commercial farming of medicinal plants, and generate employment opportunities for youth and farmers in eastern Uttar Pradesh. By supporting herb collection and cultivation, it also aims to increase local income and strengthen the Ayush ecosystem.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was instrumental in bringing the project to life, had earlier inaugurated the Ayush OPD on February 15, 2023. Evening OPD services are already operational, serving nearly 300 patients daily. Following today’s inauguration, In-Patient Department (IPD) and Operation Theatre (OT) services will also commence, along with a 28-cottage Panchakarma unit offering specialized treatments.
The university’s foundation stone was laid by former President Ram Nath Kovind on August 28, 2021. Looking ahead, the government is planning to set up a fifth university in the district—a Forestry University—with work already underway on land selection, syllabus creation, and infrastructure development.
